Disability studies focuses on the relationship of social values to societal organization, public policies, professional training and delivery of services, individual behaviour and interpersonal encounters, cultural representation. Terms frequently used include confined to a wheelchair, housebound, suffers from, stricken with, needs help, needs a cure, can"t walk, can"t talk. Confined, bound, restricted, or dependent on a wheelchair. Person with a hearing impairment; deaf person. When communicating, choice of words can be quite empowering and liberating. To ease awkward situations, simply ask the individual what he or she prefers if such terminology is even necessary in the situation: remember, we all have names. If the particular situation does not require disability- related terminology, simply use our names, please. (hayatt, 2005,14) There are many social factors that can affect whether or not individuals with disabilities are included or excluded from participation in various activities, which in turn can affect development or self-esteem.
