Document Summary
Clearly define what is a crime: codify and publicize punishment for crime. All humans are responsible for their own behaviour. Prevent crime with as little law as possible. Punishment must be swift and certain and applied without prejudice. Prevention (deterrence) of crime is a result of: certainty: how likely punishment is to occur, severity: how much pain is inflicted, celerity: how quickly punishment is inflicted. Favoured utilitarianism objective of social action is ensuring the greatest happiness for the greatest amount of people. Firm believer in the efficiency of prison: good outweighed the harm. Panopticon: advanced goal for deterrence, taken on later by michael fucault. Came about a result of advance in biology, astronomy, and chemistry. Determinism: the assumption that there are things beyond the individual that impel or constrain people in ways the lead to crime. Differentiation: the assumption that offenders can be separated from non-offenders.
