We collect data collected by police every year to analyze crime trends. 9 main categories of crime: theft & handling of stolen goods, burglary, criminal damage, violence against person, sexual offences, robbery, fraud and forgery, drug offences, other. Theft & criminal damage account for over half of recorded crime, and about one- fifth falls under violence against person. There has been a substantial rise in violent crime and criminal damage. Two key methods for measuring and tracking trends in crime: uniform crime reports (ucr)- data collected by law enforcement agencies (police) regarding crimes known by the police to have taken place. General social survey" (gss) on victimization (state sponsored)- Surveying a sample of the population over a specific time span re: eight crime types.
