Its function is to organize, integrate and direct the energy of individuals composing it. Competition (ecological order) conflict (form of interaction where ppl try to reflect and question decisions that impact the ecological order ie. deciding who will rule the country) . Accommodation (solution to the conflict ie. women granted the right to vote) assimilation (becomes part of the ecological order) back to competition. Zonal hypothesis: cities evolve from the center to the outside, can identify different zones going through different stages of ecological order. Greater disorganization in zone 2 than anywhere else higher level of crime in zone 2. Critiques shouldn"t talk about disorganization but rather how every area has different types of organization ie. downtown vs. suburbs, poor people more criminal than rich bcuz of their values, stronger police presence in certain areas. Show that not only crime is distributed this way but also other things. Shaw and mckay"s juvenile delinquency and urban areas (1942)
