Lecture 3 - the origins of pr (ii) Pr starts to play a significant role in forming public opinion: involves manipulation/deception, persuade public to particular ideological povs (capitalism, capitalism is pretty tightly controlled by corporations. Most damning critique of pr: seen as interfering in the process of government and democracy. Pr has an unfair advantage in persuading the public. Pr as a commercial involvement = inherently problematic. Pr people as skill persuaders; people are trained in this. It"s not the same as starting a blog or putting up posters. They have a bigger reach based on funding that is farther than the average person (louder voice). We don"t like the idea of an unequal playing field when we discuss democracy and the public sphere: equal playing field = idealized reality/romanticized notion, however, this is the ideal to strive for regardless.
