Document Summary

Lecture three: transition from traditional to modern society (1840s 1920s) Two of the biggest critics of modernity: marx & freud (who both think modernity sucks) Modernity promises to make life better for people, but everyone"s lives actually became better. Marx & freud talk about who did not benefit from modernity (throw water on this idea) Villages -> small, everyone knows each other, communicate by word of mouth, Industrial revolution -> mass production, powered by steam & coal & electricity, better transportation, expansion, info can move further easier faster, kingdoms are slowly replaced by things called nations , people start to get rights as citizens not. Technological revolution -> electricity, photography, motion pictures, radios, telegraphs, etc. Development of ability to create visual representations with tech. All that is solid, melts into air. marx. Gustave le bon, parisian man after the french revolution, start thinking that urbanization and swelling cities may become a problem.
