COMS 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, Ronald Mourad Cohen, News Satire
Document Summary
Freedom of expression is the right to communicate. It can be done through speech, writing, text, photos, and many alternate ways. In canada, we have the charter of rights and freedoms. Section 1 of it guarantees that rights and freedoms are set out subject to reasonable limits it is difficult to determine a boundary for this. The limits can be found in section 3b, which prohibits public incitement or willful promotion of hatred against a group. In section 2, fundamental freedoms are found where individuals are granted freedom of thought, belief etc: as mentioned earlier, section 3 is the part that brings criminal law into the equation. One can only be prosecuted if the hatred is expressed publicly (ex in an open space, not in the home. ) Us free speech states that congress can not make a law abiding free speech and press.
