COMP 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Central Processing Unit, Binary Number, Hard Disk Drive
Document Summary
Recap- how to turn a decimal number into a binary number: Answer= 0b1010010: divide number by 2 and round down each time (e. g. 20. 5=20, put a 0 beside even numbers, put a 1 beside odd numbers, read 1 and 0"s from bottom to top- that"s the binary! Computer- a general purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic or logical operations automatically. Since a sequence of operations can be readily changed, the computer can solve more than one kind of problem. Black boxes- we can see what goes into a black box (inputs) and what comes out of it (outputs), but we do not see what"s going on inside- that"s how we treat computers. Inside the black box- computers interact with 2 main types of inputs: instructions and data. Reads instructions from memory and executes them. As it reads, data stored in memory will be modified.
