Scientific racism: old scientific methods of explaining race. Race: a way of classifying people based on visual appearance. Ethnicity: a way of measuring someone based on culture and backgrounds. Visible minority: a way that policy makers hide features or terms that can signify a race or ethnicity. Racism: the idea that certain people hate/dislike people of a certain race. Institutional: the idea that certain institutions in our society are set up to be racist. Race is a social, not biological category. More variances within races then between them. Scientific racism in 18th/19th centuries, this contributed to colonialism, european powers wanted to justify why they were conquering the world, and why they were superior. Carries onto eugenics movement in the 20th century (creating better people by deciding who is allowed to reproduce) Ethnicity: thinking of someones culture of origin/cultural background (food, clothing)
