Hellenistic period = 323 bc 30 bc. Death of alexander the great to the battle of actium. Movement of greeks and non-greeks across the mediterranean. Epitome of religion in the hellenistic period: at least in 2nd c. bc. It had native greek and foreign cults, a jewish synagogue. It was an international community, unlike anything the ancient world had ever seen. Athens, sparta and corinth all tried to resist religious currents of the time. Greeks cities in asia minor more exposed to religious currents, and began increasing their pantheon already in 3rd c. The cult of isis (and sarapis) became extremely popular in the hellenistic period. In the 5th c. the greeks associated her with the goddess demeter by herodotus. Cult of isis arrives in athens in 332 bc. Cult largely spread through the proselytizing efforts of her followers and priests. By end of hellenistic period her cult was in almost everyday.
