CIVE 2700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Gypsum, Carbon Neutrality, Exothermic Process
Document Summary
Paste hardens and binds aggregate into strong, durable concrete or mortar. Concrete = cement + water + sand + aggregates. Name origins: produced concrete that resembled colour of natural limestone quarried in. There is also natural cement, pozzolan cement, masonry cement, slag cement, etc. Calcareous materials: lime with calcium oxide material (60-65%) Argillaceous materials (clay): contains combo of silica (20-25%), alumina and iron (7-12%) Lime (cao) - from limestone, shale, marl, chalk Silica (sio2) - from clay, shale, marl, sand Alumina (al2o3) - from clay, shale, ore refuse (i. e. slag) Iron (fe2o3) - from clay, iron ore, mill scale Portland cement manufacturing: production begins at quarry. Raw materials are crushed, ground and blended: blended raw materials are heated in rotating kiln to t = 1500-c. When limestone (caco3) is heated above 600-c, limestone separates into lime (cao) and carbon dioxide (co2)
