Three forms: (1) heat it -- asphalt cement (2) thin with solvents -- asphalt cutback (3) suspend in water -- asphalt emulsion. Table 9. 1 in textbook - uses of diferent types of asphalt -- very useful. Asphalt mixtures are composed of a combo of dif types of aggregate that are heated, dried and combined with asphalt binder (black goo), like cement paste in concrete. Dense-graded: coarse to ine material; provides dense and impermeable layer; surface course. Surface course: must withstand wear and abrasion forces. Open-graded asphalt concrete or portland cement concrete slab.
