Document Summary

Oral admin advantages: ease of administration, painless, no need for sterility. Injection (parenteral) advantages: affords nearly direct access to the bloodstream, rapid drug action, can be stopped instantaneously. Chapt 3 #6: nicotine and birth control (progestin/estrogen, drugs must be potent and must have a significant solubility in both oil and water, in order to pass through the semi-permeable membrane of the patch and the human skin. Using clarke"s rule (p 119) the adult dose is assumed for a 150 lb weight. Thus, for a 50 lb child, if the adult dose is 15mg, the children"s dose is (50/150) x 15mg. Drug y (fat soluble) will pass more readily through the blood-brain barrier and will deposit more readily in adipose tissue ( like dissolves like ). Drug x (water soluble ) will be excreted faster in the urine and drug y would likely have a longer half life in the body.
