Lecture 15: religion: pascal boyer"s counterontology theory: Have subsystems for understanding different things in the world: contagion, persons, living things, tools, physical objs. Religion doesn"t have a function, is a byproduct of person permanence . We find fascinating things that belong to one category but have one (or close to one) thing from another. Ex: - the ancient greek: everything is basically earth, air, fire and water. Chemistry: every atom is one set number of kinds. A ghost or god is a person with no body. A zombie is a person with no mind. A crying statue is an object with one biological property. > a physical obj but one property is living thing (cry). The most pausible (h p l ) religious thing: come up with new god, a baby can predict a future, a magic stone. Not pausible: a baby that can make soup: impossible bc we all know: person permanence. A reason why religion seems to exist.
