Cgsc note - cog sci: history, present and future. 400 bce: ancient greek philosophers made theories of mind. All this time science had not yet been invented. Little was known about the world; these guys philosophized about a whole lot. This is also the pre-histoprt of all disciplines. 1875: wilhelm wundt opened the rst psychology laboratory. Ebbinghaus did some of the rst experiments in memory. Learning, memory - discovered this by experimenting on himself. People eventually got fed up of freud"s theories/teachings. William james published principles of psychology which is still often quoted today. We don"t study mental processes directly, we study things that we can see - objectively. 1908 pavlov study - salivation of dogs - classical conditioning. Held that we cannot directly study mental processes only stimulus and behaviour. Falsi cation - there is some conceivable data that would render the theory false. Introspectionism - re ect on whats your mind and report it.
