CGSC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Photoreceptor Cell, Peripheral Vision, Tetrachromacy
Document Summary
Perception: the process by which agents interpret and organize sensation to produce : senses: Vision: this sense is used most, takes in light and changes it into meaningful representation. Audition/hearing: turning vibrations into meaning, echolocation (bats screech and when the sound comes back they understand their environment) For kids its worse to use hearing but for adults its worse to loose sight. Haptics: sense of touch, using pressure to interpret meaning (bump into something-knowing its there) Smell: nasal passages take in chemicals and change it into meaning (i smell strawberries) Atypical sensations: senses in the bowel, stomach, pain receptors, heat receptors, itch: vision: Extramission theory: rays of light emanating from the eye in combination with light in the world allow us to see. Intromission (current belief): visual perception is accomplished by rays of light re ected from objects into the eye. Light is re ected into the eye and focused on the retina. Light stimulates the rod and cone receptors.
