Lecture 2 (sept. 21) learning, memory and representation. Cognitive system: interacts with some environment in some information-processing way. A cognitive system takes action that impacts the environment: in turn, the environment is perceived by the cognitive system. Perception: transformation of things in the environment into a representation in the mind: e. g. , representation of your mother. The cognitive system is the person/brain in an animal case. Actuators change influence the action, which changes the world. Amazon will make recommendations based on previous purchases. It"s action: displays to a screen (e. g. , making recommendations) Also has perception (because you might click on something), inputs & outputs. Distributed cognition: a mind doesn"t have to be just in one skull/piece of software; it can be distributed: e. g. , writing a paper people helped, used whiteboards, researched on the computer, etc. Cognitive scientists might argue that this is distributed cognition. Actions: puts a paper out into the ta"s mailbox.
