CGSC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Vestibular System, Ovulation, Olfaction
Document Summary
Light vision: different senses are called perception modules, sound echolocation/ hearing, physical pressure touch, chemicals smell, body position kinesthetic. Human vision: extramission theory, rays of lights emanating from the eye in combination with light in the world allow us to see. Intromission theory: visual perception is accomplished by rays of light reflected from objects into the eyes. Image is severely distorted: rod: most light sensitive photoreceptive cells in the retina, cone: works best in bright light; fewer cone cells exist peripheral vision. Dorsal and ventral streams: dorsal stream: where, associated with: motion, representation of object locations and control of eyes and arms, ventral stream: what, associated with form recognition and object representation, also associated with storage of long term memory. How audition works: acoustical energy (sound waves) vibrate the eardrum or bones. Localization is done by examining differences between sounds in the two ears, similar to depth with binocular vision.
