CGSC 1001 Lecture 16: Social Cognition
Document Summary
Ability to ascribe mental states to others and explain and predict their behaviour on that basis. Can be referred to as mindreading, theory of mind, folk psychology. Can be used to explain past behaviour, ongoing, or to predict future behaviour. Example: charlie chaplin the circus a mind reading exercise (the reason we"re able to follow the story is because were engaging in fairly sophisticated mindreading ) Piaget: before people develop the ability, they"re egocentric. Before age of 7 kids don"t really have the ability to do this. Egocentric: can"t view the world from other people"s point of view. Egocentric children assume others see the same thing as them (in 3 mountain-model) If children don"t understand that belief can be false, then the kid doesn"t have the concept of belief. Ex: i believe that capital of canada is toronto but i don"t know that. Children around 4 have no problem passing the task.
