CGSC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Weak Ai, Isight, Truth Table
Document Summary
Recap: functional concepts: can be made out of different materials, are defined relationally in terms of the role they play in a wider system. Other examples of functional concepts: states of a computing machine. Sort of a simulation: strong ai: the properly programmed computer is a mind. Thinking is just the manipulation of formal symbols according to rules. Strong ai: two key claims, computer programs exhibit understanding, they do not just simulate it, simulation of ability x vs. actual demonstration of ability x, their operation explains how human understanding works. Experiment: man is stuck in a room and does not speak chinese. Symbols are coming in the room (questions) through the input and he is passing along answers through output, learning it by himself. He does not understand chinese but knows the rules by learning the rules. Against strong ai: computer programs simulate but do not exhibit understanding, this is not a matter of understanding in degrees.
