Levels of signiicance: can be recognized/ designated by municipaliies, councils/ministries, the country, etc. World heritage list: sites must be of outstanding universal value and meet at least 1 of 10 selecion criteria. *rideau canal was chosen for the following two criteria: (1) represents masterpiece of human genius (2) outstanding example of type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates signiicant stages in human history. Built primarily for strategic military purposes when britain & us vied for control of region.
