19% of women over 18 have been sexually assaulted. 427,000 women over the age of 15 reported they had been sexually assaulted in just one year (only 10% reported to police) Over 50% of women over 16 experienced sexual violence in one of its manifestations. Sexual assault= focus on the violent" nature of rape. Non-violent: date rape, stranger rape, spouse max 18 months. Use of a weapon- max 14 years. Disfiguring, engendering of a woman"s life- max life. Change of focus from victim" to the violence" . Questioning the victim, instead of the aggressor (see the rape of mr. smith) Responsibilities of women disguised as safety practice. Organizing our understandings of gender and space. Controlling the space in which people function. Individual/ isolated instances (result of some individual actions by sick" men) illusion of control. Every month 3 women are murdered by men they know in ontario. Every 6 days a woman is murdered by an intimate partner in canada.
