Let"s think more about the idea that the nation has declined in importance. If this is true, what are the other places that we find/perform our identity. One of the key symbols of nationalism is the land. This is what the rest of the course is about. The way we encounter space and the way we imagine that space on a daily basis. Think about two different models for understanding our relationship with space. We rework that space for our own use, relationship isn"t one sided. Writers and artists are architects of nation: culture is driven by art, poetry etc, 1950"s and 60"s, people wrote canada would never be a country until a great. Canadian author/novel comes along: look at the national gallery, look at the archives of what has been written, tells us that literature or folk traditions are a way of keeping the nation together.
