Switches: operate at the data link layer to forward packets between network segments. Routers: operate at the network layer to connect two different networks. Messages are passed up to the network layer. Vlan switches(layer-3 switches): devices that combine the features of layer-2 switches and routers, primarily for virtual lans. Main distribution facility: room containing rack of networking equipment. Patch cables: used to connect devices in the rack to each other. Chassis switch: can be used instead of a rack , enables users to plug modules directly into the switch, flexible. Vlan: flexible lan segmentation and prioritized traffic, based on logical design, uses layer-3 switches, complex. Single-switch vlan: uses one switch, segments computers into different vlan segments (subnets) Multi-switch vlan: l3-switches communicate using inter-switch protocols that support vlans. Vlan trunks: circuits that connect two vlan switches and enable traffic to flow from one switch to another. Best architecture: switch bn or vlan for distribution layer, routed bn at core layer, gigabit.
