Lecture 2: some limestone is made from animals whose fossil remains are full of calcium, when you drop hcl on it, it effervesces, limestone can be metamorphosed to marble, marble effervesce (because it contains calcium) Lichens: the bare rock was colonized by lichens, lichens are two different organisms, one is a fungus and inside it is either algae, they are living together, symbiotic relationships between fungi and algae. As pioneer species fall out and die, conifers take over: there"s a slow advancement of trees in ontario depending on how the seeds are transported, shade-tolerant trees such as sugar maples or sources replace shade- This is the end stage: you can break down the province by dominant canopy-forming regions, these are used to define forest regions, the more north you go, the more coniferous trees, until you reach the hudson bay lowland.
