BIOL 2903 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Sedimentary Rock, Canadian Shield, Populus Tremuloides
Document Summary
Testing rocks : limestone to test limestone, geologists use acid (hcl). When they drop the hcl on the rock, the rock bubbles up. It does this because calcium in these rocks when it interacts with the hci it creates cardon dioxide and water. Some limestone is made from animals whose fossil remains are full of calcium. These rocks are important for plants like poison ivy which only grow around calcium: igneous and metamorphic when you drop acid on igneous and metamorphic rocks the hcl does not respond and does not bubble up. Bunchberry plant strives near rocks that are not acidic and therefore strives around igneous and metamorphic. Physiographic regions: area distinguished by types of rock and lay out of land in that region. There are a few different regions in ontario: canadian shield underlies everything, and buried under young rocks in many areas. Then there are the forest regions which were explained last week.
