Elaborate social lifestyle: have a multicellular- like behaviour. When nutrients are plentiful, they live as a predatory swarm : often referred to as a wolfpack . Secretes hydrolytic enzymes, lysing other bacterial cells for consumption: they move in a ripple type fashion to ensure that they destroy all other bacteria. When nutrients are low, fruiting bodies form: 10^5 cells per fruiting body. When conditions are not ideal for living, spores form which allows the bacteria to survive under the harsh conditions. Question: a mutant that has a nutritional requirement for growth is an example of a: autotroph, auxotroph, heterotroph, organotroph. A mutant strain of microorganism that will grow only when the medium is supplemented with some specific substance not required by wild-type organisms. Trp-, ala- mutant requires tryptophan and alanine to grow. These mutants are used in genetic exchange and genetic complementation experiments. Important for studies that look at the order of how genes are transferred.
