Phishing draws in small birds to create a mobbing effect. Different types of protective elements in plants: structural elements (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, silica, etc. ) make plant tissues hard to digest. Other digestibility reducers are not structural components: tannins: astringent (bitter, drying agent) = plant secondary metabolite (made by plant for defence) Other non-structural plant defences: terpenoids: taste bitter do not contain nitrogen, asters contain alkaloids contain nitrogen. Interferes w/ am animal"s ability to digest food. Rock polypody (fern) is loaded w/ moulting hormones = phytoecdysone. Phytoecdysone: make an insect mature too quickly, they die & can"t reproduce: ex. Insets that eat a plant w/ phytojuvenile hormones do not mature knocks out adult breeding stage & dies. Phytoestrogens: mess up an animal"s reproductive system (bigger animals: ex. Phototoxins: very nasty side effects migrate under the skin through the blood system make the skin highly sensitive to uv damage, sores that become infected & the animal dies: ex.
