BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Ruffed Grouse, Sperm Donation, Amplexus
Document Summary
Asexual: requires no partner, breaking apart to create a new animal, little genetic diversity. Does not allow for as much change as sexual does. External: both sex cells are on the outside of the body. Frogs and toads use external fertilization through amplexus. Most animals use internal fertilization to better guarantee their efforts. Freshwater sponge are colonial filter feeders and reproduce externally, they are also hermaphrodites. They release sperm into the water, the sperm donor never meet. Clams also send their sperm into the water, and it is diverted to the eggs. Being hermaphroditic doubles the changes of reproduction. Slugs, snails and earthworms are also hermaphrodites. Sedentary or slow movies animals double their chances of reproducing by reproducing by being both sexes. Snow fleas = insects called springtails are not hermaphroditic. Many male springtails leave spermatophores on the ground for the female to pick up. It allows for them to never meet, even though they aren"t hermaphrodites.
