Indian pipe is also like a parasite as it uses the mycoheterotroph strategy, using mycorrhizal associations to get nutrients from living plants. Most plants are autotrophic produce own food using light. Many shade dwelling orchids photosynthesize and steal carbon from other plants through mycorrhizae. Its roots form haustoria on the roots of the other plants, which it finds by tracking their chemicals released to attract mycorrhizae. Any plant that does this is totally parasitic and thus is called a holoparasite: ex. It is a wild flower like cancerroot called dwarf mistletoe: some habitats have a lot of sunlight but too much sun can be a problem. Solutions: have leaves with a small surface area, ex. Buttercup has tiny leaves growing on a 450 angle: sand dunes are extremely sunny and hot places.
