Document Summary

Is the mimicking of the attributes of animals surroundings. Masquerade is used by animals to change" their appearance to resemble something in the environment that is an inedible item. On the ground, moths use dead-leaf mimicry, they roll up their wings and their dark colouration gives the impression that they are hollow, just like dead leaves. Mimicry = the external resemblance of an animal/plant or part of it to another animal/plant/inanimate object. Dead leaf mimicry - common with moths. Live leave mimicry - with katydids and luna moths. Twig mimicry - with inchworms and walking sticks. Bird dropping mimics - with giant swallowtail caterpillars. The camouflaged looper: (a caterpillar) cuts off plant material and wears it. Spittle bug: sucks out juice from plant material and surrounds itself in the foam. Wooly aphids: creates silk strands over their body to disguise them. Scarlet lily leaf beetle grub: coat themselves in poop so plant fragments can stick to it.
