Once their in the ant colony underground, they are protected: northern water and garter snakes hold eggs internally until they hatch = Some male sh (bass and bluegill sun sh) do. #1: the pack cooperatively raises the pups, in mid-summer pups are taken to open places called rendezvous sites. Delayed implantation (sperm meets egg right away after meeting) allows bears to mate and to give birth when the time is right: many carnivores display this delayed implantation (i. e. black bears, weasels, Shers: fishers mate shortly after birth, bats mate in summer and give birth in the next spring, their gestation is about 40 days. Instead they store sperm: social insects (bumblebees and paper wasps) also store sperm all winter long. After hatching, altricial nestlings remain in the nest. Longer development in the egg allow chicks to hatch mobile and largely self- su cient. Precocial chicks leave the nest after hatching: incubation is also an investment.
