BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Cyperaceae, Pollen Basket, Pollination
Document Summary
Males track these plumes with their antennas which contain openings for just catching the female pheromones (4 million sensory pores per antennae). Males bring smaller sh to females as gifts. Important because both the male and female take turns feeding the babies: edible courtship gifts are also given by some male spiders, scorpion ies, and dance ies. To avoid being eaten: male marsh wrens also o er gifts - males with more dummy nests tend to attract more females. This is because the more the male can build, it could possibly re ect that there is more food availability. Most are hermaphroditic: flower sex organs, stamens (male) produce sperm, pistil (female) produce eggs. Stigma is the part that receives the sperm. Style is where the sperm has to travel.
