Uses of fire today:
BBQ, candles, lighters, camp fires, gas/wood stove, school work with flames (lol), fireplace,
science… > in the past we went from daily use to very rarely using fire.
Wraughan on Control of Fire (CoF)
His hypothesis = As efficiency of provisioning goes up, the extrinsic morality goes down
(increased) efficiency of provisioning benefits: (advantages of cooking)
- allows for cooking food
- reliably enhances food energy, digestibility and softness (qualities)
- allows earlier wearing
- higher nutritional value of cooked foods (shortened inter birth intervals, which is necessary
for routine fertility)
- fewer raw sources necessary for same E benefit. (energy benefit)
- enhances value of kin provisioning (because it makes more provisions)
- act of cooking is a means of contribution to the society, for and by. (juveniles and the
elderly)
Wranghan says that: Cooking consistently increases the energy obtainable from most
foods
He said this after looking at various research types:
Research types: (2 types)
1) All studies of human raw faddists and comparisons of domestic/wild animals that eat cooked
food vs. raw diets. the more cooked food in the diet the greater net E gain for the food
2) It has been assumed that raw starch and protein are well digested by humans (little to no
nutrient reaches fees in undigested form). Starch/proteins are not digested in the large
intestine (not completely digested in the small intestine)
What do these researches lead us to conclude?
Every animal species investigated to date fares acceptably (does ok) on raw diets. Only
humans cannot (is not ok).
No human has lived on raw wild food for more than a few weeks. Urban raw faddists can
survive on raw domesticated food, all risking chronic E shortage.
Raw food-sits can survive on raw domesticated food (like supplements) all risk a
chronic energy shortage. One study found that most women on a raw food diet were sub-
fecund. The incidence of varied positively with the % of raw food and time duration of raw-food-
ism practice.
It seems people cannot survive well enough on raw food. It’s curious. We seem to be
dependant on food… now. but, according to the past, Wraughan says we should look:
