Nero"s golden palace symbol of nero"s self-indulgence, must be eliminated building for the people built in its place, the colosseum. Oval shaped, large combat field in the middle. Thought to have a large canvas roof over it for protection against rain. Clever design and planning, many passage ways and entrances to direct people to seats efficiently. Symbolic trabeation on outer wall, engaged columns and lintel frame every arch, used for decoration. 3 levels, different order for each one: from bottom to top: doric, ionic, corinthian, uses symbolic meaning of each order, eloquence and beauty, sense of propriety. Original wooden floor is gone, basement is left: many corridors, where all the machinery is located: ropes, pulleys, trap doors. Used to bring gladiators/animals to the stage: wooden floor covered with dirt for easy clean up.
