Arth 1101 lecture 1 july 5th 2016. Perception of what art is has changed maths, philosophy, all used to be considered arts sciences were considered hands on topics: visual arts had rules, standards, an arithmetic behind it all. Now, the rules have disappeared, but art still means something and can relate to the old traditions. North vs. south alps (i. e. belgium vs. italy) split in art, there are some key differences. Dominated by international gothic style, due to the widespread prosperity in europe: madonna and child (c. 1390) Rise of the european aristocracy correlates with the rise in art. Aristocracy has an international outlook, much information is spread this way (and also through the church) Aristocrats liked sophisticated, graceful beauty (following the beauty standards of the time, high foreheads), so that"s what the art at the time reflected. Altarpieces became popular in churches, a spectacular visual to go with ceremonies churches were places funded by aristocrats.
