In the first reading, de laet analyzes the pump roles as an appropriate technology. My first question for this reading is, what does it mean by appropriate technology. I find this weeks reading a lot harder to understand compared to the second reading. Even after reading through the article, i am still not certain on what the purpose of a bush pump is. I am also confused about the section where they talk about the human actor and one human actor did not invent it. It is the idea of the actor, which makes it unclear of how it is tied to the appropriate technology. I think what made it also difficult to understand is it seems more scientific than anthropological. I find the terminology more difficult to understand, as they use terms like actant. However, i did find it fascinating the construction of the pump could serve as a ceremonial purpose.
