ANTH 1001 Lecture 7: Lecture 7
Document Summary
World views and the nature of reality. Humans develop understandings of everyday experiences through language, play, art, myth, and ritual. Use cultural practices to also make sense of the world. These encompassing pictures of reality are called world views. Can have competing world views in a society. Dominant forms can be enforced through practice and law. Every society has forms of religion and belief. Every culture has rules for logic and understanding and uses them to make sense of the world. Religion is used as one system for making sense of the world - but it, like science, is not the only way to see. Examining religions often reveals much about those who practice them as well as those who study them. Play is a generalized form of behavioural openness. Openness is the ability to think about, speak about, and do different things in the same way or the same thing in different ways - a form of liminality.
