Media, cultural studies & reality television : a sociological perspective. Mass media is an umbrella term for many visual communications from music, ads, films, etc. Functions to reach many audiences, not just a particular niche. To spread ideas/ideologies one of the critique of mass media is that it can became propaganda: ex, videos of usa army, act act as ideologies of nationalism, but at the same time, can act as propagandas. Also act as escapism (a way to forget) Ex, films very much hold their power in their escapism. Politcs or the way that globalization of mass media is promoting democracy worldwide as the. Mass media promote traditional families (nuclear) look at images of families, most will be be a mother, father and children. At the same time they also undermine traditional value loss of social/family bonds. A way to study the effects of mass media, through a largely marxist view point.
