Document Summary

How is sexuality gender: men dictate how it unfolds, men aren"t given the same social permission to express emotions. Sexuality- ways in which we think about and behave toward ourselves and others as sexual beings: social, socio-psychological and cultural aspects. Public opinion- more liberal attitudes: media, sexual education, sexual activity as normal. Dominant understanding of sexuality- sexuality is innate, it is a biological process/drive . Disrupting biological explanations: ideas about sexuality change over time and place, sexual practices are taught, desire is multi-focal. Sexuality is socially shaped: what is sex, when is sex appropriate, with whom, how, which bodily sensations, which desires, which identities, shift from marital to extra-marital sex, sexual double standard. 19th century- focus on procreation, not attraction or identity. Rise of heteronormativity (heterosexuality as natural and normal) Heterosexuality as an identity: by playing gender straight , by distancing oneself from any association with homosexuality. Orientation- who you desire to have sexual relations with (asexual, bisexuality, homosexuality, heterosexuality)
