Anthropology: the way of life of a people. Humanities: high culture the best that has been thought and known . Sociology of culture/cultural sociology: convergence of these two extremes. High culture: museums, art galleries, poetries, opera. Society culture symbol systems symbols: basic element of society, expressive aspect of society, symbol society: represent thinking, feeling, behavior, symbols: things that represent something else, both involve meaning. The relationship between culture and society: humanities perspective, culture is autonomous from society, sociology, culture is influenced by social factors, link between culture and society. Functionalism: close fit between culture and society, human societies need to maintain themselves and need to reproduce itself, always faced with problem of having children (what and how to raise them) Day care: social institutions meet those needs, society in a state of equilibrium, elements of society reflect each other, culture reflects society, and society reflects culture. Institutions rely on each other to meet needs.
