This lecture on contemporary social theory" continues with the general preoccupation of conflict theorists, which is analysing : antonio gramsci: hegemony. Accepted marx"s analysis of class inequalities under capitalism. Marx: capitalists use force/coercion to dominate working class(police,military) Gramsci: more often they manipulate ideas as a subtle form of control physical force/coercion vs. the manipulation of ideas as a more subtle form of control. Hegemony of capitalists ideas only works when the working class agrees with them. Social institutions (school,media,religion) distribute and legitimate ideas. Come to appear as common sense-taken for granted- become hegemonic. Examples 1) capitalism 2) non-economic ideas related to gender and sexual hegemony. Examples of hegemony: capitalism, gender and sexual hegemony. French philosopher - founder of poststructural school of thought. Exercised in daily life by everyone; embodied. Power is a resource you do or don"t have wielded over others to oppress; repressive. Power is exercised as we enact discourses. Sets of rules many by social institutions.
