What does it do: sets of ideas backed by evidence to explain something, description plus explanation, helps you understand what"s going on in your life, every phenomenon needs explanation, nothing is self-evident. Each has a set of common premises and addresses sociological questions. Functionalism is the only theory that argues for social order. Social order theories: the battle against chaos: functionalism, society: organism or interdependent parts existing in balanced equilibrium. Institutions regulate people"s self-interest; socialized selves hide self-serving beasts. The powerful have privileges and resources, and the disadvantaged are undervalued but also are agents of social change: examples are workers unions, black lives matter protests. Karl marx (1818-1883: capital: the book is an analysis of the economic system of capitalism. Products of their labour belong to the bourgeoisie. The history of capitalist society is the history of class struggle: class struggle: e. g. 19th century british cotton mills.
