A pervasive psychopathology that results in severe deviation of developmental trajectory. While schizophrenia is a serious disorder at any age, childhood onset has profound effect on emerging competencies in emotional, cognitive and social domains. Positive symptoms: delusions (my sister wants to kill me, hallucinations (the television is telling me to , disorganized speech (loose associations, rapid change of topics, difficult to follow topic) Negative symptoms: flat affect (affect does not match topic; no over very little affect, social withdrawal (finds strategies to reduce or eliminate social interactions, no eye contact, etc. ) Severe functional impairment or, in children, failure to achieve expected level of social and academic achievement. If there is concurrent autism or similar pdd, additional diagnosis of schizophrenia applies only if there are prominent hallucinations or delusions. : delusions and auditory hallucinations (grandiose or persecutory: disorganized. : flat affect or inappropriate emotions, disorganized behaviour and speech: catatonic. : doesn"t fit into one of the above.
