Document Summary
Brief history of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) Prior to dsm, core aspects of adhd seen as: morbid deficit of moral control , brain-injured child syndrome . 1968 dsm-ii: hyperkinetic reaction of childhood : psychoanalytic influence, shift away from brain damage hypothesis. 1980 dsm-iii: add with hyperactivity and without hyperactivity. 1987 dsm-iii-r: adhd, no subtypes: adhd without hyperactivity separate disorder. 1994 dsm-iv-tr adhd: combined type (both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, inattentive type, hyperactive-impulsive type. Three types of adhd are identified: adhd, combined type (adhd-c): both inattentive and impulsive, adhd, predominantly inattentive (adhd-pi, adhd, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive (adhd-hi) Based mostly on school aged kids with adhd-c. Executive functioning deficits (poor goal directed behaviour) Kids with low iq placed in inappropriate academic setting often manifest symptoms of inattention. Inattention in classroom may also occur when high iq kids are place in under-stimulating environment. Adhd must also be distinguished from difficulty in goal-directed behaviour in children from inadequate, disorganized or chaotic environments.
