Document Summary

This seems easy; develop a questionnaire and distribute in various circumstances. The problem is that stress is very broad. Despite having the same mechanisms, stress is different for everyone (depends on what kind of person you are) The variables involved seem simple; environmental variables (stressor) and the outcome (strains) This is problematic (e. g. , in the workplace pressure = stress) For some people this is the case, for others it is not (unless the pressure causes you trouble) Some will rate the objective nature of the job (stimulus); e. g. , emergency room surgeon. Others will rate the way they feel (response); e. g. , paperboy. Early approaches looked at a simple stimulus-response relationship. This has produced inconclusive results because of the lack of variables. More recently, researchers want to look at the environmental conditions that produce strain (stress outcome response) E. g. , individual factors (personality) or environmental factors (social support) and how these lead to illness or ill effects.
