Recall that mammals have : internal fertilization, gestation, lactation. All of which make female parental investment more likely than male. Relatively few mammal species have substantial parental investment by males. Examples of those that do : various dogs (wolves, foxes, etc. , some rodents (california mouse, prairie vole, humans (but not other primates) But even in humans, parental care by men never approaches that of women (even in societies where men do a lot of parental care) In pre-modern societies, mother"s survival is crucial for offspring survival (grandmother"s survival helps too) Father"s survival is often helpful but less crucial. Recall that the sex with less parental investment has more variance in reproductive success. I. e. , a man can potentially have many more children than a woman, but is much more likely to have no children. Also the sex that provides more parental investment is.
