PSYC 3P37 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Dental Caries, Improved Sanitation, Industrial Revolution
Document Summary
Beginning around 10,000 years ago, some peoples in several parts of the world adopted different lifestyles. Farming starting independently in middle east, new guinea, n/s. Americas not sure if it spread from middle east to north africa, Lets consider several of these changes (and things that didn"t change) in relation to human evolution (physical and psychological) People were mobile, and so was food supply (typically), so no way to rule over others. Could walk away from would-be dictators, or expel or kill them. But no central authority to resolve disputes, so conflicts could easily end in deadly violence and neighboring bands (esp. if closely related) could make violent raids on each other. When agriculture became well developed (permanent settlements, food storage) there was now the potential for hierarchy and control. If food supply is controlled by a leader with armed followers, he can rule over everyone can"t just walk away or expel them.
