PSYC 1F90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Turing Test, Psycholinguistics, Amygdala
Document Summary
Hot system: go , simple, reflexive, fast, develops early, accentuated by stress stimulus control. Seen by the conservation and balance beam experiment. Skinner and pavlov spoke about how people are driven by discriminative stimulus, the power of the situation. Practice develops cool system; developing stronger metacognitions (thoughts about thinking); plans or narratives for when we are in the midst of temptation. Allows people to remain cool and reflective in stressful situations. Recognize the power of stress to shift control to the hot system; e. g. try to stop smoking when stress is low. Chronic stress (esp. child abuse) sensitizes the amygdala; in the hot system so much that it over works. Cool system shuts down and individual becomes panicky and kick into crisis mode when not necessary. Intuition: cool system; reflexive condition that becomes practice makes it automatic. Don"t have to go to top of tower and not know what will happen when you jump off.
