A placebo is an inactive substance given as medicine. Blind: if we are worried about research participant bias we keep research participants blind to the true purpose of the study. We can gain some control over both researcher bias and re- search participant bias by keeping both experimenters and research participant unaware of the true purpose of the study. Government approved medical research must use dou- ble-blind designs.
